Two seminars by Jared Cherni, Senior Product Manager, GE Distributed Power

There are two opportunities to meet and discuss Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engines directly with Jared Cherni, Senior Product Manager, GE Distributed Power, who will be presenting his thoughts and sharing knowledge on the Jenbacher CHP range of engines.

1. CHP lifecycle enhancements that GE call Conversions, Modifications & Upgrades (CM&U's)

This meeting will take place at 14:00, on 2nd May 2016 at University of Edinburgh,  Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation Building (ECCI), Infirmary Street, Edinburgh.

  • Life Extension (i.e. to first major overhaul) from 60k oh to 75k op Hours 2. Service Intervals Extension: Extend life of oil and consumable parts via Blowby, Spark Plug Life, Additional Oil Tanks, Improved Combustion Parts 3. Performance Enhancements to achieve higher electrical efficiency, faster ramp-up to full load, or better  emissions 4. Controls System Upgrade and Advanced Monitoring/Analytics
  • In addition Jared will discuss the Remanufactured Parts Program and Engine Exchange Program.  Provide an overview of the GE Jenbacher Exchange engine program which facilitates putting the engines and alternators through their recommended Major Overhaul at about 60,000 operating hours without major downtime of the asset. Also to include discussion on the GE reUp remanufactured parts which allows reduction of lifecycle costs without compromising reliability or quality.  The Engine Exchange Program is designed to limit downtime of the genset when it is time for the Major Overhaul. We basically send an engine of identical specifications already overhauled and swap it for the engine requiring overhaul so the asset is down for only a few days instead of several weeks.
  •  Discuss the potential opportunity to collaborate on additional CM&U's that the University may find particularly interesting and that didn't fit in GE's R&D budget for 2016.

2. Connecting University of Edinburgh IES research with Industry Practitioners: Presentation on GE Renewable Energy and Combined Heat & Power

This IES seminar will take place at 12:45, on 3rd May 2016 at University of Edinburgh, Alrick Ground Floor, Classroom 10. There will be host of hot beverages, sandwiches and cakes available from 12.45.

  • Overview of General Electric and its portfolio of products and services in the sector of distributed generation and renewable energy including:
    • Combined Heat and Power
    • Onshore Wind
    • Very brief overviews of developments in Tidal Turbines, Concentrated Solar Power, Energy Storage and Photovoltaic Solutions
  • Insights on industrial sector innovations and opportunities for applied research
  • Specific discussion on CHP opportunities as desired

Biography

Jared is a University of Edinburgh Sustainable Energy Systems MSc graduate currently employed with General Electric’s Distributed Power Business Unit. At GE he leads the product line for remanufactured engine components, which is part of the suite of lifecycle solutions GE offers for its Jenbacher and Waukesha engines, used in various distributed energy applications.

Prior to his current role he was part of GE’s Junior Officer Leadership program where he did three rotations with different business units over a two year period. These rotations included two with GE’s Onshore Wind business first as a Services Program Manager working on streamlining “big data” to enhance predictive analytics and another as the Project Manager for the delivery and commissioning of a 110MW wind park. His third rotation was with Distributed Power where he was the Services ProductManager for GE’s newest gas engine, the J920.

Prior to GE and the UoE MSc Jared was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Coast Guard where he was responsible for ships and people that accomplished the missions of maintaining U.S. waterways with aids to navigation and icebreaking, enforcement of fisheries regulations, and responding to search and rescue at sea. He earned a bachelor’s of science in naval architecture and marine engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
